NorCal hotel working to help workers with panic buttons

A PANIC BUTTON. >> IT HELPS ME FEEL SECURE WHEN I’M ON THE FLOOR, ESPECIALLY IF I’M THE ONLY PERSON ON THE FLOOR FOR HOUSEKEEPING. KEVIN: AND SHE TOLD US SHE’S ALREADY PUT IT TO USE, WHEN SHE CAME ACROSS A CO-WORKER WHO COLLAPSED. WITH A TAP OF THE BUTTON, SECURITY WAS NOTIFIED OF THEIR EXACT LOCATION. >> AND AUTOMATICALLY OUR SUPERVISORS CAME UP AND THEN W HAD THE PARAMEDICS COME UP WITH SECURITY. AND SHE WAS OK THANK GOD BUT IT’S GOOD THAT WE HAD THE BUTTON. KEVIN: THE PROGRAM, ORIGINALLY MEANT FOR HOUSEKEEPING STAFF, HAS NOW BEEN EXTENDED TO OTHER STAFF INCLUDING SHUTTLE DRIVERS. DRIVER TERRY KENSINGER USED HIS PANIC BUTTON TO NOTIFY SECURITY WHEN HE WAS CONFRONTED BY THREE AGGRESSIVE PEOPLE AT A DOWNTOWN SACRAMENTO STOP. >> I LITERALLY THOUGHT, OH, THIS IS WHEN I SHOULD PUSH THE BUTTON, BECAUSE I DIDN’T KNOW HOW IT WAS GOING TO END. KEVIN: WITHIN MOMENTS, SECURITY AND HIS SUPERVISORS WERE ON THE PHONE AND CONTACTING POLICE. BUT WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE AT THUNDER VALLEY RESORT IS THE EXCEPTION RATHER THAN THE NORM. SACRAMENTO COUNTY IS ONE OF THE FIRST JURISDICTIONS TO REQUIRE LARGE HOTELS TO USE PANIC BUTTONS. THE CITY OF SACRAMENTO HASN’T TAKEN UP THE ISSUE YET. IN FACT, FEW OTHER NORTHERN CALIFORNIA COUNTIES OR CITIES REQUIRE THEM. EVEN PLACER COUNTY, WHERE THUNDER VALLEY IS LOCATED, DOESN’T REQUIRE THEM. THE RESORT IMPLEMENTED THEM ON ITS OWN. An effort to require panic buttons for hotel workers across California never made it through the Capitol. However, panic buttons are required in some parts of Northern California. Sacramento County supervisors were the first in the state to require the buttons in hotels with 25 or more rooms. In Placer County, one hotel is finding they are helping in ways they didn't imagine.
